Another truly foundational reggae giant has left us. Robbie Shakespeare’s work as a bassist and as a producer was hugely influential on pretty much everyone who has made reggae over the past five plus decades, whether they know it or not. And Robbie was one of the few reggae producers, along with his partner Sly Dunbar, who also found success outside of reggae with his work for Bob Dylan, Grace Jones, and Serge Gainsbourg, which is inspirational to all of us in the reggae community.
« Robbie’s work as part of The Revolutionaries at Channel One in the 70’s. His playing and production with Black Uhuru showed that reggae could gain wider appeal without being watered down ».
—Michael Goldwasser
Big respect to Robbie Shakespeare.
